Through TMS of North Alabama, North Alabama Family Psychiatry & Counseling has proudly offered NeuroStar® Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) since 2019. Our established TMS program provides an FDA-cleared, non-invasive outpatient treatment for eligible adolescents and adults with treatment-resistant depression and adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
NeuroStar TMS is an advanced treatment option for individuals who have not achieved adequate improvement with antidepressant medications or who have been unable to tolerate medication side effects. Using targeted magnetic pulses, NeuroStar® TMS stimulates specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation and the neural circuits associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), helping to improve communication within these networks and reduce symptoms over time.
Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation, does not induce seizures, and allows patients to remain awake and alert throughout each treatment session. Treatments are performed in our Madison, Alabama office, and patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward.
Every patient undergoes a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to determine whether NeuroStar® TMS is an appropriate treatment option. Our experienced team works closely with each patient throughout treatment, providing individualized care and ongoing monitoring to help achieve the best possible outcome.
NeuroStar® TMS is a non-invasive treatment performed in our Madison office under the supervision of experienced psychiatric providers. Because the treatment does not involve surgery, patients remain awake and alert throughout each session. No anesthesia or sedation is required, and most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
Unlike oral antidepressant medications, NeuroStar® TMS is non-systemic, meaning it is not taken by mouth and does not circulate throughout the bloodstream. By delivering targeted magnetic pulses directly to specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation and the neural circuits associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), TMS avoids many of the systemic side effects that may occur with antidepressant medications.
As part of our physician-led TMS program, every patient receives a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to determine whether NeuroStar® TMS is an appropriate treatment option and is closely monitored throughout the course of treatment.

NeuroStar® TMS is provided in our Madison office as part of a comprehensive psychiatric treatment program. Every patient receives a thorough psychiatric evaluation, an individualized treatment plan, and ongoing oversight from our experienced psychiatric team throughout the course of therapy.
At North Alabama Family Psychiatry & Counseling, we utilize the FDA-cleared NeuroStar® TouchStar™ Theta Burst protocol for virtually all eligible patients. A typical course of treatment consists of 36 treatment sessions administered once daily, Monday through Friday, over approximately 6 weeks. Most treatment sessions are completed in approximately 4 minutes, allowing patients to return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward.
Although the exact causes of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are complex, research has shown that these conditions are associated with changes in the brain networks responsible for mood regulation, cognition, and behavior. NeuroStar® TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate these underactive neural circuits, helping to restore healthier brain activity without surgery, anesthesia, or systemic medication.
NeuroStar® TMS is not intended to replace medication for every patient. Instead, it helps restore healthier brain activity and may enhance the brain's ability to respond to ongoing psychiatric treatment, including medication when appropriate. Your treatment plan will be individualized based on your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment history, and clinical response.
Since introducing NeuroStar® TMS in 2019, TMS of North Alabama has provided advanced, evidence-based treatment for patients throughout North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley. If you have not experienced adequate improvement with medication or have been unable to tolerate medication side effects, NeuroStar® TMS may be an effective treatment option.
